Chapter 11

To Elliot’s surprise Doctor Markinson was the first to climb onto the plateau and he simply laid down, breathing heavily. Keith pushed himself up with an energy that was astounding. Sitting there, he helped Cathy and Lisa, before it was Elliot’s turn. Keith made no gesture to help him, and Elliot didn’t say anything, but instead pushed his arms onto the platform and drew himself up. He crawled onto it without being especially graceful. His legs felt so weak, he didn’t dare to try and stand up. Laying down, he breathed in the air. It had a metallic taste, and he heard the humming coming from two of those boxes. Finally free of the suit he enjoyed breathing freely anyway.

“Oxygen levels are fine, air filtration worked perfectly,” Cathy said, leaning over one of the boxes. “We can breathe here.”

Elliot felt nobody would have truly cared if they couldn’t. Kneeling there, he looked around. The cave rose up and the light didn’t reach the ceiling. A massive stone structure built the northern wall and he felt his heart make an extra beat, as he saw stairs. Stairs leading to an opening in the stone.

“You were right. They truly created those caves themselves,” Elliot said to Cathy. “All the way to the bottom of the sea. What a monumental task. What an achievement of engineering, for a race without computers who probably had only a basic understanding of math.” He laughed. He couldn’t help it.

Keith went to another of the dozen boxes and opened the locks, with a loud clack. The airtight interior sucked air in, as he opened it, and he began handing out bottled water. “We have enough for a few days,” Keith said, as he gave Elliot his. “After that, we got filters, to make the salt water digestible.”

Cathy emptied half her bottle. “Food is more critical. We had rations for two days, but that was calculating for three grown men. If we ration it carefully, we might last a week on those.”

“Are you saying you expect us to be here for a week?” Lisa asked.

“At least,” Keith said. “They need to get a new submarine and one with an airlock and an entrance large enough to enter for us with our suits. They might fly it in and considering they have no longer radio or satellite connections, I guess they’ll need to send one of the speedboats to Greece to actually contact anyone. That alone will take a day.”

He had obviously thought this through.

“We need between a thousand six hundred to a thousand eight hundred kilo calories a day not to starve,” the doctor said.

“I will go deep inside,” Elliot proclaimed.

“We need oxygen masks for that. Only this room got prepared,” Cathy said and crawled over to him. “But we have three sets of those here. Fifteen cylinders of air, five for each.”

“Perfect,” Elliot said. She had wanted the divers to do this. Enter the cave system, which was clearly man-made, and explore it. It would have been thrilling to watch them, but Elliot found the prospect of doing it himself to be .
